Beaulieu-sur-Dordogne has a rich history: it all began in the High Middle Ages, when Beaulieu-sur-Dordogne was a simple fishing village. Legend has it that Rodolphe, Seigneur of the de Turenne family, was so impressed by the place that he decided to found a Benedictine abbey, the Abbey of Saint-Pierre, to attract pilgrims. The town grew rapidly around the abbey, with a rampart pierced by three fortified gates.
